Combining ArchiMate® 3.0 with Other Standards – BMM / BS / BMC

As we have described in our previous blog , the ArchiMate language is not intended to replace other standards and modeling approaches, but rather to connect them. In this blog, we will focus on relating ArchiMate to several management-oriented techniques: The Business Motivation Model, Balanced Scorecard, and Business Model Canvas.

To help you relate ArchiMate models to those more detailed models in other techniques, the tables below provide an approximate mapping between ArchiMate concepts and the other previously mentioned techniques. In these tables, the more abstract, high-level concepts are presented on the left and the more concrete, detailed concepts are in the right-hand column.

Business Motivation Model

The Business Motivation Model (BMM) has been one of the inspirations behind ArchiMate’s motivation concepts. BMM distinguishes between means, ends, influencers and assessments and provides a more detailed, fine-grained description of business motivation than ArchiMate’s motivation concepts.

Balanced Scorecard

The Balanced Scorecard is a widely used high-level technique for strategic performance management of organizations. It provides four perspectives on performance and addresses these in a layered structure using mission, objectives, measures, targets and initiatives to express the strategic direction. Strategy maps are often used as a depiction of these elements and their relationships.

Business Model Canvas

The Business Model Canvas provides you with a high-level overview of the structure of the current or envisaged business models of an organization.

Relating different models in BiZZdesign Enterprise Studio

BiZZdesign Enterprise Studio supports ArchiMate 3.0, along with some of the aforementioned languages, such as Business Model Canvas. However, ArchiMate 3.0 is used to express other techniques such as Business Motivation Model and Balanced Scorecard.
Figure 1 demonstrates how some ArchiMate 3.0 concepts are used to model concepts from the Business Motivation Model. Between the << guillemets >> we show the name of the ArchiMate 3.0 type (AM) and the Business Motivation Model type (BMM).

In Enterprise Studio, users can use ArchiMate 3.0 concepts on Balanced Scorecards. In Figure 2 we show how a metric (specialization of Driver from ArchiMate 3.0) can be used as a measure on a Balanced Scorecard.

Figure 3 shows a typical Business Model Canvas and how Enterprise Studio automatically converts this to ArchiMate 3.0.

Enterprise Studio has many more ways of combining different languages. This helps to answer specific business questions and deliver business value on different levels.
