Enterprise Architecture

During the Open Group Conference in Cannes I delivered a presentation on “Successfully implementing EA with TOGAF® and ArchiMate®”. Moreover, I joined as expert into a very interesting ‘ask the expert panel session’ with good questions from the audience. This resulted in 6 important questions. In this short blogpost series I will address these questions with some more detail.

Question 1: Is TOGAF getting too comprehensive?

The question is understandable if you look at the sheer size of the TOGAF specification. However, we should keep in mind that the TOGAF standard is developed to be suitable for many different situations. For example:

  • Types of organization: commercial, government, education, etc.
  • Scope: enterprise-wide architecture, IT architecture, etc.
  • Level of impact: strategic architecture, project architecture, etc.

Catering for all the different situations and goals for architecture is far from easy. The specification of the standard has many convenient tools and guidelines that can be used in specific situations. In order for organizations to successfully use the TOGAF standard, it is essential to adapt the framework and customize it so it fits seamlessly with other frameworks (for e.g. project management, governance etc.). More information can be found in our Quick Start Program.
