During the Open Group Conference in Cannes I delivered a presentation on “Successfully implementing EA with TOGAF® and ArchiMate®”. Moreover, I joined as expert into a very interesting ‘ask the expert panel session’ with good questions from the audience. This resulted in 6 important questions. In this short blogpost series I will address these questions with some more detail.
Question 2: How can we keep EA simple in order to be more successful?
One of the challenges for architects is not to do too much too soon. There are many areas in the enterprise where architects can help but that doesn’t mean they should do all these things at once. After from the “law of raspberry jam” it follows that if you spread your attention over too many topics then the attention will be spread really thin. Too thin.
The trick is to modularize your approach and add things to the architecture capability one step at a time. For example, if you start with supporting projects with Architecture Contracts (or: project start architecture) then a logical next step would be to extend this with roadmaps, followed by standards management, and so on. By focusing your attention and adding value early you’ll build momentum and a reputation that will open many more doors.
