During the Open Group Conference in Cannes I delivered a presentation on “Successfully implementing EA with TOGAF® and ArchiMate®”. Moreover, I joined as expert into a very interesting ‘ask the expert panel session’ with good questions from the audience. This resulted in 6 important questions. In this short blogpost series I will address these questions with some more detail.
Question 5: How do you make sure that EA solves the real problems of an organization?
To be able to solve problems in your organization and actually move forward, you have to think of the problem. Is it that the car is broken, or is the real problem, that you won’t be able to get to work anymore?
Actually, this in my opinion this is one of the key benefits of having a solid architecture practice: handling this question is part of the DNA of any good architecture practice.
Consider this question in the light of TOGAF’s ADM: in the early phases (prelim, vision) the focus is on formulating a (business) vision that clarifies what we are trying to achieve. Helpful techniques in this respect are root cause analysis, or formulating goals in terms of business scenarios. In subsequent phases when we talk about target architectures and implementation strategies one is forced to keep an eye on the ball too: results from each phase are signed off by stakeholders who helped formulate the vision and all sorts of assessments (such as the enterprise transformation readiness assessment) make sure we stay on track and that we implement the right changes at the right time, and thus help the organization in becoming more effective.
