During the Open Group Conference in Cannes I delivered a presentation on “Successfully implementing EA with TOGAF® and ArchiMate®”. Moreover, I joined as expert into a very interesting ‘ask the expert panel session’ with good questions from the audience. This resulted in 6 important questions. In this short blogpost series I will address these questions with some more detail.

Question 6: Do I have to give each phase of the model the same attention?

The simple answer to this question is “no, you don’t”. To see why, note that TOGAF’s preliminary phase is all about tailoring the framework and linking it to existing frameworks in your organization. If you already have a solid approach project- and program management (i.e., Prince2), governance (ITIL/ ASL/ COBIT) or security (SAPSA) implemented: by all means, link to these frameworks. There is no point in reinventing the wheel.

The trick is to keep your eye on the ball: focus on what you want to achieve and – as part of phase P – tune the framework for your specific needs.
